Mr Fearing comforted

Mr Fearing comforted

“O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”
 Matthew 14:31

Suggested Further Reading:
 Isaiah 51:9-16

Why did Simon Peter doubt?
He doubted for two reasons.
First, because he looked too much to second causes, and secondly, because he looked too little at the first cause.

The answer will suit you also, my trembling brother.
This is the reason why you doubt, because you are looking too much to the things that are seen, and too little to your unseen Friend who is behind your troubles, and who shall come forth for your deliverance.

See poor Peter in the ship—his Master bids him come; in a moment he casts himself into the sea, and to his own surprise he finds himself walking the billows.

His foot is upon a crested wave, and yet he stands erect; he treads again, and yet his footing is secure.
“Oh!” thinks Peter, “this is marvellous.”

He begins to wonder within his spirit what manner of man he must be who has enabled him thus to tread the treacherous deep; but just then, there comes howling across the sea a terrible blast of wind; it whistles in the ear of Peter, and he says within himself, “Ah! Here comes an enormous billow driven forward by the blast; now, surely, I must, I shall be overwhelmed.”

No sooner does the thought enter his heart than down he goes; and the waves begin to enclose him.
So long as he shut his eye to the billow, and to the blast, and kept it only open to the Lord who stood there before him, he did not sink; but the moment he shut his eye on Christ, and looked at the stormy wind and treacherous deep, down he went.

For meditation:

The Christian is in a battle against unseen enemies.
The shield of faith helps us to fight and, having done all,
to stand (Ephesians 6:12-16); to put it down for a moment and to rely on sight is to risk falling in battle.

Divine gentleness acknowledged

Divine gentleness acknowledged

‘Thy gentleness hath made me great.’
Psalm 18:35

Suggested Further Reading:
Deuteronomy 8:11–20

There are several readings of this text.
The word is capable of being translated,
‘thy goodness hath made me great.’

David saw much of benevolence in God’s action towards him, and he gratefully ascribed all his greatness not to his own goodness, but to the goodness of God.

‘Thy providence’ is another reading, which is indeed nothing more than goodness in action. Goodness is providence in embryo; providence is goodness fully developed.

Goodness is the bud of which providence is the flower; or goodness is the seed of which providence is the harvest.
Some render it, ‘thy help,’ which is but another word for providence; providence being the firm ally of the saints, aiding them in the service of their Lord.

Some learned annotators tell us that the text means,
‘thy humility hath made me great.’
‘Thy condescension’
may, perhaps, serve as a comprehensive reading, combining the ideas which we have already mentioned, as well as that of humility.

It is God’s making himself little which is the cause of our being made great. We are so little that if God should manifest his greatness without condescension, we should be trampled under his feet; but God, who must stoop to view the skies and bow to see what angels do, bends his eye yet lower and looks to the lowly and contrite, and makes them great.

While these are the translations which have been given to the adopted text of the original, we find that there are other readings altogether; as for instance, the Septuagint, which reads, ‘thy discipline’—thy fatherly correction—
‘hath made me great;’ while the Chaldee paraphrase reads, ‘thy word hath increased me.’

Still the idea is the same.
David ascribes all his own greatness to the condescending goodness and graciousness of his Father in heaven.
I trust we all feel that this sentiment is echoed in our hearts.

For meditation:

We should rejoice in the Lord Jesus Christ—in his gentleness (2 Corinthians 10:1), goodness (Acts 10:38),
help (Hebrews 4:14,16) and humility (Philippians 2:8).
As the result of these attributes God has done great things for us (Psalm 126:2–3; Matthew 12:29; Luke 8:39; 2 Corinthians 8:9).

Christ set forth as a propitiation

Christ set forth as a propitiation

‘Christ Jesus, whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood.’
Romans 3:24–25

Suggested Further Reading:
Exodus 25:17–22

God has set forth Christ as being a propitiation.
The Greek word is hilasterion which, being translated, may mean a mercy seat or a covering.

Now God has said to the sinner,
‘Do you desire to meet me?
Would you be no longer my enemy?
Would you tell me your sorrows?
Would you receive my blessing?
Would you establish a commerce between your Creator and your soul?
I set forth Christ to you as being the mercy seat, where I can meet with you and you can meet with me.’

Or take the word as signifying a covering; as the mercy seat covered the tables of the law, and so covered that which was the cause of divine anger, because we had broken his commandment.

‘Would you have anything which can cover your sin?
Cover it from me your God, so that I need not be provoked to anger; cover it from you so that you need not be cowed with excessive fear, and tremble to approach me as you did when I came in thunders and lightnings upon Sinai?
Would you have a shelter which shall hide altogether your sins and your iniquities?
I set it forth to you in the person of my bleeding Son.

Trust in his blood, and your sin is covered from my eyes; it shall be covered from your own eyes too; and being justified by faith, you shall have peace with God through Jesus Christ your Lord.’

O that we may have grace to accept now what God the Father sets forth! The Romish priest sets forth this and that; our own Romish hearts set forth such-and-such-another thing; but God sets forth Christ.

The preacher of doctrine sets forth a dogma; the preacher of experience sets forth a feeling; the preacher of practice often sets forth an effort; but God puts before you Christ.
‘There I will meet with thee.’

For meditation:

Christ is the only propitiation that God in his mercy will accept as a covering for our sin (Romans 3:25; Hebrews 2:17;
1 John 2:2; 4:10). Have you accepted him too, or are you still trying to bodge your own cover-up job?
 It won’t work (Genesis 3:7–9).
