The world turned upside down

The world turned upside down

“These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also.”
Acts 17:6

Suggested Further Reading:
 Matthew 5:1-12

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.”
The merciful are not much respected in this world—at least if they are imprudently merciful; the man who forgives too much, or who is too generous, is not considered to be wise.

But Christ declares that he who has been merciful—merciful to supply the wants of the poor, merciful to forgive his enemies and to pass by offences, shall obtain mercy.

Here, again, is the world turned upside down.
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
The world says, “Blessed is the man who indulges in a carefree life.”

If you ask the common run of mankind who is the happy man, they will tell you, “The happy man is he who has abundance of money, and spends it freely, and is freed from restraint—who leads a merry dance of life, who drinks deep of the cup of intoxication—who revels riotously, who, like the wild horse of the prairie, is not restrained by reason, but who dashes across the broad plains of sin, unharnessed, unguided, unrestrained.”

This is the man whom the world calls happy: the proud man, the mighty man, the Nimrod, the man who can do just as he wishes, and who spurns to keep the narrow way of holiness.

Now, the Scripture says, not so, for “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”

“Blest is the man who shuns the place Where sinners love to meet;
Who fears to tread their wicked ways, And hates the scoffer’s seat….”

The man who cannot touch one thing because that would be lascivious, nor another because that would spoil his communion with his Master; a man who cannot frequent this place of amusement, because he could not pray there, and cannot go to another, because he could not hope to have his Master’s sanction upon an hour so spent—that man is blessed!

For meditation:

The world was turned upside down through men who had been turned upside down (Mark 9:34,35; 10:42-44).
Do we need to know a lot more of that in our churches and individual lives?

A glorious church

A glorious church

‘Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.’ Ephesians 5:25–27

Suggested Further Reading:
Jeremiah 31:1–3; 31–34

A husband loves his wife with a constant love, and so does Christ his church. He will not cast her away tomorrow having loved her today.

He does not vary in his affection.
He may change in his display of affection, but the affection itself is still the same.

A husband loves his wife with an enduring love; it never will die out: he says, ‘Till death us do part will I cherish thee;’ but Christ will not even let death part his love to his people.

Nothing ‘shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ A husband loves his wife with a hearty love, with a love that is true and intense.

It is not mere lip-service. He does not merely speak, but he acts; he is ready to provide for her wants; he will defend her character; he will vindicate her honour, because his heart is set upon her.

It is not merely with the eye that he delights now and then to glance upon her, but his soul has her continually in his remembrance: she has a mansion in his heart from whence she can never be cast away.

She has become a portion of himself; she is a member of his body, she is part of his flesh and of his bones; and so is the church to Christ for ever, an eternal spouse.

He says, ‘Forget thee, I will not, I cannot …’
This church is only a church of Christ, because he has made her so. She had no right or title to his affection; he loved her because he chose to do so, and having once loved her, he never will divorce her: she shall be his, world without end.

For meditation:

The institution of marriage has been marred by divorce and human hardness of heart (Matthew 19:3–9); but it was designed both to depict the relationship between Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:31–32) and to follow the example of that relationship (Ephesians 5:23–25).

The first resurrection

The first resurrection

‘Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection; on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.’
Revelation 20:6

Suggested Further Reading:
John 5:19–29

Damnation, the second death, shall have no power on those who rise at the first resurrection. How can damnation fall on any but those who are sinners and are guilty of sin? But the saints are not guilty of sin.

They have sinned like others, and they were by nature the children of wrath even as others. Their sin has been lifted from them: it was laid upon the scapegoat’s head of old.

He, the eternal substitute, even our Lord Jesus, carried all their guilt and their iniquity into the wilderness of forgetfulness, where it shall never be found against them for ever.

They wear the Saviour’s righteousness, even as they have been washed in his blood; and what wrath can lie on the man who is not only guiltless through the blood, but is meritorious through imputed righteousness? O arm of justice, you are nerveless to smite the blood-washed! O flames of hell, how could even so much as the breath of your heat pass upon the man who is safe covered in the Saviour’s wounds? How is it possible for you, O deaths, destructions, horrors, glooms, plagues, and terrors, so much as to flit like a cloud over the serene sky of the spirit which has found peace with God through the blood of Christ? No, brethren, ‘Bold shall I stand in that great day …’ There shall be a second death; but over us it shall have no power.

Do you understand the beauty of the picture?
As if we might walk through the flames of hell and they should have no power to devour us any more than when the holy children paced with ease over the hot coals of Nebuchadnezzar’s seven times heated furnace.

For meditation:

Only God’s saving power can free us from the power of the second death (Jude 25). How terrifying must be the fate of the unbeliever, cut off from God’s saving power
(2 Thessalonians 1:9), but still under his condemning power
 (Luke 12:5).

The power of prayer and the pleasure of praise

The power of prayer and the pleasure of praise

‘Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.’
 2 Corinthians 1:11

Suggested Further Reading:
Acts 1:12–15

We cannot all preach; we cannot all rule; we cannot all give gold and silver, but we can all contribute our prayers.
There is no convert, though he be only two or three days old in grace, who cannot pray.

There is no bedridden sister in Jesus who cannot pray; there is no sick, aged, illiterate or penniless believer, who cannot add his supplications to the general stock.

 This is the church’s riches.
We put boxes at the door that we may receive your offerings to God’s cause—remember there is a spiritual chest within the church, into which we should all drop our loving intercessions, as into the treasury of the Lord.

Even the widow, without her two mites, can give her offering to this treasury. See, then, dear friends, what union and communion there are among the people of God, since there are certain mercies which are only bestowed when the saints unitedly pray.

How we ought to feel this bond of union! How we ought to pray for one another! How, as often as the church meets together for supplication, should we all make it our bounden duty to be there! I would that some of you who are absent from the prayer meeting upon any little excuse would reflect how much you rob us all.

The prayer meeting is an invaluable institution, ministering strength to all other meetings and agencies.

Are there not many of you who might come among us a little oftener? And what if you lose a customer now and then, do you not think that this loss could be well made up to you by your gains on other days? Or if not so, would not the spiritual profit much more than counterbalance any little temporal loss?
‘Not forgetting the assembling of yourselves together, as the manner of some is.’

For meditation:

United congregational and group prayer is of vital importance (2 Chronicles 7:14; Ezra 8:21–23; Daniel 2:17–19;
Matthew 18:19–20; Acts 1:14,24; 2:1,42; 4:24,31; 12:5,12;
1 Timothy 2:1,8). How much of a contribution do you make to the prayer meeting?
