In a lamentable accident which occurred in the North,

in one of the coal pits, when a considerable number of the miners were down below, the top of the pit fell in, and the shaft was completely blocked up.

Those who were down below sat together in the dark, and sang and prayed.

They gathered to a spot where the last remains of air could be breathed.

There they sat and sang after the lights had gone out,

because the air would not support the flame.

They were in total darkness, but one of them said he had heard that there was a connection between that pit and an old pit that had been worked years ago.

He said it was a low passage, through which a man might get by crawling all the way, lying flat upon the ground—he would go and see; the passage was very long, but they crept through it, and at last they came out to light at the bottom of the other pit and their lives were saved.

If my present way to Christ as a saint gets blocked up,

if I cannot go straight up the shaft and see the light of my Father up yonder,

there is an old working,

the old fashioned way by which sinners go,

by which poor thieves go, by which harlots go—come,

I will crawl along lowly and humbly,

flat upon the ground—I will crawl along till I see my Father, and cry, ‘Father, I am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants,

so long as I may but dwell in thy house.’

In your very worst case you can still come as sinners.

‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners;’

call this to mind and you may have hope.

The believer who suffers a fall should remember, repent and return to those first but abandoned works (Revelation 2:4–5). That was Jonah’s route back from the pit to the land of the living (Jonah 2:6–10).

Faith omnipotent

‘Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.’

Faith studies what the promise is—an emanation of divine grace, an overflowing of the great heart of God; and faith says, ‘My God could not have given this promise, except from love and grace; therefore it is quite certain that this promise will be fulfilled.’

Then faith thinks, ‘Who gave this promise?’ She considers not so much its greatness, as ‘Who is the author of it?’

She remembers that it is God that cannot lie, God omnipotent, God immutable; and therefore she concludes that the promise must be fulfilled; and forward she goes in this firm conviction.

Then she remembers, also, why the promise was given, namely, for God’s glory, and she feels perfectly sure that God’s glory is safe, that he will never stain his own character, nor mar the lustre of his own crown; and therefore she concludes that the promise must and will stand.

Then faith also considers the amazing work of Christ as being a clear proof of the Father’s intention to fulfil his word.

‘He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?’ Then faith looks back upon the past, for her battles have strengthened her, and her victories have given her courage.

She remembers that God never has failed her, that he never did once fail any of his children. She recollects times of great peril, when deliverance came, hours of awful need, when as her day her strength was; and she says, ‘No; I never will be led to think that he can now forswear himself, and change his character, and leave his servant.’

Faith, moreover, feels that she cannot believe a hard thing of her dear God. Is it wrong to use that expression? I must use it, for he is dear to me.

The faith of the early Christians was widely spoken about (Romans 1:8; Ephesians 1:15; Colossians 1:4; 1 Thessalonians 1:8; 3:6; Philemon 5). What message does your faith convey to you about God, and to others about your relationship with him?

Instability

Instability

“Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel.”

Genesis 49:4

Who are these unstable ones? When they were boys they could never complete a game; they must always be having something fresh; and now they are just as childish as when they were children.

Look at them in doctrine: you never know where to find them. You meet them one day, and they are very full of some super doctrine; they have been to some strong Calvinist place, and nothing will suit them except the very highest doctrine, and that must be spiced with a little of the gall of bitterness, or they cannot think it is the genuine thing.

Very likely next week they will be Arminians; they will give up all idea of a fixed fate, and talk of free-will, and man’s responsibility like the most earnest Primitive Methodist.

Then they steer another way. “Nothing is right but the Church of England. Is it not established by law? Ought not every Christian to go to his parish church?” Let them alone; they will be at the most schismatical shop in the metropolis before long.

Or if they do not change their denomination they are always changing their minister. A new minister starts up; there is no one, since the apostles, like him; they take a seat and join the church; he is everything to them.

In three months they have done with him; another minister rises up some distance off, and these people are not particular how far they walk; so they go to hear him.

He is the great man of the age; he will see every man’s candle out, and his will burn on. But a little trouble comes on the church, and they leave him.

They have no attachment to anything; they are merely feathers in the wind, or corks on the wave.

Do you recognise yourself here? If not, guard your own stability carefully. But if you do, realise that we are not supposed to remain babes in Christ, but are to grow up (Ephesians 4:14,15). Perhaps you are not sure whether Spurgeon is describing you; one question may help you decide—who has the rule over you? (Hebrews 13:7,17).
