The Reason for Singing

"The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; 

He will save, 

He will rejoice over thee with joy; 

He will rest in his love, 

He will joy over thee with singing" 

  (Zephaniah 3:17).

What a Word is this! 

Jehovah God in the center of His people in all the majesty of His power! This presence alone suffices to inspire us with peace and hope. 

Treasures of boundless might are stored in our Jehovah, and He dwells in His church; therefore may His people shout for joy.

 We not only have His presence, but He is engaged upon His choice work of salvation. 

"He will save." 

He is always saving: He takes His name of Jesus from it. 

Let us not fear any danger, for He is mighty to save. 

Nor is this all. 

He abides evermore the same, He saves, He finds rest in loving, He will not cease to love. His love gives Him joy. 

He even finds a theme for song in His beloved. 

This is exceedingly wonderful. 

When God wrought creation He did not sing but simply said, "It is very good"; but when He came to redemption, then the sacred Trinity felt a joy to be expressed in song; Think of it, and be astonished! Jehovah Jesus sings a marriage song over His chosen bride. 

She is to Him His love, His joy, His rest, His song.

 O LORD Jesus, by Thine immeasurable love to us teach us to love Thee, to rejoice in Thee, and to sing unto Thee our life-psalm.

Judgment threatening but mercy sparing

‘Cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also.’

Jesus Christ has pleaded for you, the crucified Saviour has interfered for you. And you ask me ‘Why?’ I answer, because Jesus Christ has an interest in you all. 

We do not believe in general redemption, but we believe in every word of this precious Bible, and there are many passages in the Scripture which seem to show that Christ’s death had a universal bearing upon the sons of men. 

We are told that he tasted death for every man. What does that mean? Does it mean that Jesus Christ died to save every man? I do not believe it does, for it seems to me that everything which Christ intended to accomplish by the act of his death he must accomplish, or else he will be disappointed, which is not supposable. 

But did he in any other sense die for the rest of mankind? He did. Nothing can be much more plain in Scripture, it seems to me, than that all sinners are spared as the result of Jesus Christ’s death, and this is the sense in which men are said to trample on the blood of Jesus Christ. 

We read of some who denied the Lord that bought them. 

No one who is bought with blood for eternal salvation ever tramples on that blood; but Jesus Christ has shed his blood for the reprieve of men that they may be spared, and those who turn God’s sparing mercy into an occasion for fresh sin, do trample on the blood of Jesus Christ. 

You can hold that doctrine without holding universal redemption, or without at all contradicting that undoubted truth, that Jesus laid down his life for his sheep, and that where he suffered he suffered not in vain. 

Now, sinner, whether you know it or not, you are indebted to him that did hang upon the tree, for the breath that is now in you.

For meditation: 

Christ suffered and died on the cross to save all who would repent and trust in Him; God’s delays are to give us the opportunity to do that (2 Peter 3:9). 

To abuse His kindness and patience by continuing to reject Christ instead of repenting is to add insult to injury and to store up trouble for eternity (Romans 2:4–5; Hebrews 10:29).

The Safest Shelter

The Safest Shelter 

"And a Man shall be as an hiding-place from the wind and a covert from the tempest" 

(Isaiah 32:2).

Who this Man is we all know. 

Who could He be but the Second Man, the LORD from heaven, the man of sorrows, the Son of Man? What a hiding place He has been to His people! He bears the full force of the wind Himself, and so He shelters those who hide themselves in Him. 

We have thus escaped the wrath of God, and we shall thus escape the anger of men, the cares of this life, and the dread of death. Why do we stand in the wind when we may so readily and so surely get out of it by hiding behind our LORD? Let us this day run to Him and be at peace. 

Often the common wind of trouble rises in its force and becomes a tempest, sweeping everything before it. Things which looked firm and stable rock in the blast, and many and great are the falls among our carnal confidences. 

Our LORD Jesus, the glorious man, is a covert which is never blown down. In Him we mark the tempest sweeping by, but we ourselves rest in delightful serenity. 

This day let us just stow ourselves away in our hiding place and sit and sing under the protection of our Covert.

The cedars of Lebanon

‘The trees of the Lord are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted.’

 Psalm 104:16

A traveller tells us that in the wood, bark, and even the cones of the cedar there is an abundance of resin. They are saturated with it so that he says he can scarcely touch one of the cedars of Lebanon without having the turpentine or resin of them upon his hands. 

That is always the way with a truly healthy Christian; his grace is externally manifested. There is the inner life within, it is active, and by and by when it is in a right state, it saturates everything. 

You talk with the gracious man, he cannot help talking about Christ; you go into his house, you will soon see that a Christian lives there; you notice his actions and you will soon see he has been with Jesus. 

He is so full of sap that the sap must come out. He has so much of the divine life within, that the holy oil and divine balsam must flow from him.

 I am afraid this cannot be said of all of us; it is because we get to be dependent upon man, and not on God, and therefore have little of this sap; but if we are independent of man, and live wholly upon God, we shall be so full of sap that every part of us will betray our piety.

 And then let me say that this sap is abundantly to be desired. Oh, when I think what glory a full-grown Christian brings to God, what honour the faith of a believer puts upon Jesus, when I think what a knowledge of God and divine things an advanced believer possesses, when I contemplate his own joy and peace of mind, I could wish that every one of you, (though it is well to be hyssops on God’s wall), could be cedars upon God’s Lebanon.

 Oh that we would grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

For meditation:

 Inner spiritual life must be seen in outward deeds. What a joy it is when truth in the soul overflows to such an extent that it fills a Christian’s life (Romans 15:14; 2 John 4; 3 John 2–4). Our perfect example is the Lord Jesus Christ who was full of grace as well as truth (John 1:14).
