The sinner’s friend

The sinner’s friend

‘A friend of publicans and sinners.’
Matthew 11:19

Suggested Further Reading:

Isaiah 55:1–7

We know of a place (near Winchester) in England still existing, where there is a portion of bread served to every passer-by who chooses to ask for it. Whoever he may be he has but to knock at the door of St Cross Hospital, and there is the portion of bread for him.

Jesus Christ so loves sinners that he has built a St Cross Hospital, so that, whenever a sinner is hungry, he has but to knock and have his wants supplied. No, he has done better; he has attached to this hospital of the cross a bath; and whenever a soul is black and filthy it has but to go there and be washed. The fountain is always full, always efficacious.

There is no sinner who ever went into it and found it could not wash away his stains. Sins which were scarlet and crimson have all disappeared, and the sinner has been whiter than snow.

As if this were not enough, there is attached to this hospital of the cross a wardrobe, and a sinner, making application simply as a sinner, with nothing in his hand, but being just empty and naked, may come and be clothed from head to foot.

And if he wishes to be a soldier, he may not merely have an undergarment, but he may have armour which shall cover him from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. If he wants a sword he shall have that given him, and a shield too.

There is nothing that his heart can desire that is good for him which he shall not receive. He shall have spending money so long as he lives, and he shall have an eternal heritage of glorious treasure when he enters into the joy of his Lord.

For meditation:

Christ crucified draws sinners to himself (John 12:32–33).

When they come to him, he is the perfect host, not turning anyone away (John 6:37),
but offering them all the very best hospitality (John 6:35).
He can be fully recommended by all who come to him in truth (John 6:68–69).

Reigning grace

Reigning grace

“That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 5:21

Suggested Further Reading:
Romans 5:12-17

An awful contemplation is that of the reign of sin. Permitted to come into this world as a usurper—having mounted its throne upon the heart of man by flattering blandishments, and crafty pleasantries, it was not long before it fully developed itself.

Its first act was to smite Eden with blast and mildew by its breath; its next act was to slay the second child of man and that by the hand of the eldest born. Since then, its reign has been scarlet with blood, black with iniquity, and fraught with everything that can make the heart of man sad and wretched.

Oh sin, thou tyrant monster, all the demons that ever sat upon the throne of Rome, were never such as thou art; and all the men, who from the wild north, have come forth as the scourges of man, the destroying angels of our race, though they have waded up to their knees in the blood of mortals, have never been so terrible as thou art.

Thou hast reigned unto death, and that a death eternal—a death from which there shall be no resurrection—a death which casts souls into an eternal grave—a grave of fire. Our apostle now changes the subject, and represents man under the gracious state, as rejoicing in another government, ruled by another king.

Just as sin has reigned, and with despotic and irresistible power has ground his subjects in the very dust, and then cast them into the flames, so does grace with irresistible goodness, constrain the chosen multitude to yield obedience, and thus prepares them for eternal bliss.

See, it lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, and makes him to sit among princes. Mark its shining course, and behold it blessing the sons of man wherever it stretches out its silver sceptre, chasing away the misery of night, and giving the joy of gospel day.

For meditation:

Refugees from the dominion of darkness are accepted as citizens of the kingdom of God’s beloved Son (Colossians 1:13) and they will never be sent back to their former home.

Heart’s-ease

Heart’s-ease

‘He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.’
Psalm 112:7

Suggested Further Reading:
Psalm 42:1–11

If you give way to fright and fear when you hear of evil tidings, how can you glorify God? Saints can sing God’s high praises in the fires and bless his name on beds of sickness, but you cannot if you fall into distractions.

Why, man, can your murmuring praise God? Your doubting and fearing, as if you had none to help you, will these magnify the Most High? Come, I pray you, if you would honour God, be brave. A certain good man was much troubled under a loss in business; his wife tried to comfort him but failed, and being a very wise woman she gave it up till the morning.

In the morning when she came downstairs her face looked so sad that her husband said, ‘What is the matter with you?’ She, still preserving a mournful countenance, said that a dream had troubled her. ‘What was it, my dear,’ he said, ‘you ought not to be troubled with dreams.’

‘O,’ she said, ‘I dreamed that God was dead, and it was such reason for trouble, that all the angels were weeping in heaven, and all the saints on earth were ready to break their hearts.’ Her husband said, ‘You must not be foolish, you know it was only a dream.’

‘O but,’ she said, ‘to think of God’s being dead!’ He replied, ‘You must not even think of such a thing, for God cannot die, he ever lives to comfort his people.’ Instantly her face brightened up, and she said, ‘I thought I would bring you thus to rebuke yourself, for you have been dreaming that God had forsaken you, and now you see how groundless is your sorrow.
While God lives his people are safe.’

For meditation:

Do you ever act as if God is dead? If God the Son had never risen from the dead, it would be right for Christians to be utterly miserable (Luke 24:17; John 20:11; 1 Corinthians 15:17–19).
Christ was dead, but Christ is risen; he cannot die again (Romans 6:9),
but he lives for ever (Hebrews 7:25; Revelation 1:18).
So ‘Why weepest thou?’ (John 20:13,15); our rejoicing in these great facts should help us face all circumstances.
