Soul murder—who is guilty?

Every man, especially in a great city like this, is responsible not only for himself but for his neighbours, and there are some of us who are like the church clock—other people set their watches by us.

It becomes such of us as are religious teachers to be particularly careful. There are some things which I feel I might do, as far as I am concerned, which I believe I might do without suffering any personal hurt, but which I would not do for your sakes and which I dare not do for the sake of many who would take license from my example to do a great deal more than I would do, and would make me the horse on which they would put the saddle of their sin.

Christian parents, you must not always say, ‘I can do this.’ Yes, but would you like everybody else to do it, because, if it is unsafe for one, it seems to me, you have no business to touch it.

‘If meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth,’ is a grand old Christian saying of one who was not a whit behind the very chief of the apostles.

We must be careful even of things indifferent, but when it comes to those things which are positively evil, the ill example of a Christian is ten times worse than that of one who is not a Christian, for if I see a sinner commit sin, his example is poison, but it is labelled.

The inconsistent life of a Christian is unlabelled poison, and I am very likely to be injured by it. Inconsistent Christians, false professors, you that have a name to live and are dead, take care lest bloodguiltiness lie at your door, and much of it too.

For meditation:

No man is perfect.

Spurgeon was a cigar-smoker.

This became the subject of controversy in later years.

He did not regard smoking as a sin in itself, but justified his habit on the grounds that it relieved his physical pain, soothed his weary brain and helped him to sleep.

However, non-smokers criticised him for setting an example which led others into a body-destroying habit.

Do you eat or drink anything or do something else which could cause others to stumble (Romans 14:21)?

‘He shall feed his flock like a shepherd.’

Isaiah 40:11

‘And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.’ So you see Christ is the chief Shepherd at the second advent; then shall the world be astonished to find that though alone in atonement, and alone in justification, he is not alone in service or in glory.

Then every minister who has fed his sheep, every teacher who has fed his lambs—all of you, holy men and women, who have in any way whatever contributed under him towards the guidance, and the government, and the feeding, and the protection of his dear, blood-bought flock—you shall appear.

He has no crown, you perceive, as the good Shepherd; we do not read of a crown for him as the great Shepherd, but when he comes ‘with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him’, then shall you also appear with him in glory, having the crown of life that fades not away.

I do not know whether this peculiar circumstance interests you, but it did me when I observed it: Good in his dying, great in his rising, chief in his coming.

It seems to me to gather such force—good to me as a sinner, great to me as a saint, chief to me as one with him in his glorious reign.

I pass, as it were, through three stages—as a sinner I look to the good Shepherd laying down his life for the sheep; I reach higher ground, and as a saint I look to the great Shepherd to make me perfect in every good work to do his will; I mount higher still, I die, I rise again, I walk in resurrection life, and now I look to the chief Shepherd, and hope to receive at his hands the crown of life which he shall give to me, and not to me only, but to all them that love his appearing—the good, great, chief Shepherd.

Jacob, the toiling shepherd (Genesis 31:38–41);

Joseph, reigning in the world for the good of his own people (Genesis 37:2; 49:22–24); Moses, the shepherd of a separated people (Exodus 3:1; 10:9,24–26); David, the shepherd as king in the midst of his church (Psalm 78:70–71).

Declension from first love

There are some people who always live upon what they have been. I speak very plainly now. There is a brother in this church who may take it to himself; I hope he will. It is not very many years ago since he said to me, when I asked him why he did not do something—“Well, I have done my share; I used to do this, and I have done the other; I have done so and so.”

Oh, may the Lord deliver him, and all of us, from living on “has beens!” It will never do to say we have done a thing. Suppose, for a solitary moment, the world should say, “I have turned round; I will stand still.” Let the sea say, “I have been ebbing and flowing these many years; I will ebb and flow no more.”

Let the sun say, “I have been shining, and I have been rising and setting for many days; I have done this enough to earn me a goodly name; I will stand still;” and let the moon wrap herself up in veils of darkness, and say, “I have illuminated many a night, and I have lighted many a weary traveller across the moors; I will shut up my lamp and be dark for ever.”

Brethren, when you and I cease to labour, let us cease to live. God has no intention to let us live a useless life. But mark this; when we leave our first works, there is no question about our having lost our first love; that is sure.

If there be strength remaining, if there be still power mentally and physically, if we cease from our office, if we abstain from our labours, there is no solution of this question which an honest conscience will accept, except this, “Thou hast lost thy first love, and, therefore, thou hast neglected thy first works.”

For meditation:

Past love is no substitute for present expressions of it (Philemon: 5-7,20). Present work is no guarantee that love cannot be lost in the future (Philemon: 24; 2 Timothy 4:10).
