The Unfailing Watch

"Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep"   

(Psalm 121:4).

Jehovah is "the Keeper of Israel." 

No form of unconsciousness ever steals over Him, neither the deeper slumber nor the slighter sleep. 

He never fails to watch the house and the heart of His people. This is a sufficient reason for our resting in perfect peace. Alexander said that he slept because his friend Parmenio watched; much more may we sleep because our God is our guard. 

"Behold" is here set up to call our attention to the cheering truth. Israel, when he had a stone for his pillow, fell asleep; but His God was awake and came in vision to His servant. 

When we lie defenseless, Jehovah Himself will cover our head. The LORD keeps His people as a rich man keeps his treasure, as a captain keeps a city with a garrison, as a sentry keeps watch over his sovereign. 

None can harm those who are in such keeping. 

Let me put my soul into His dear hands. 

He never forgets us, never ceases actively to care for us, never finds Himself unable to preserve us. 

O my LORD, keep me, lest I wander and fall and perish.

 Keep me, that I may keep Thy commandments. 

By Thine unslumbering care prevent my sleeping like the sluggard and perishing like those who sleep the sleep of death.

as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, 

which were come out of every town of Galilee, 

and Judæa, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.’ 

Luke 5:17

Christian men and women, join together to pray for your friends who cannot or will not pray for themselves; and if you meet with any in deep distress, palsied with despair, who cannot lift the finger of faith, strive to bring them to hear the gospel; bring them where Christ is working miracles. 

If one of you cannot prevail to lay the case before the Lord, let two of you unite; if two should not be enough, let four blend their petitions; if four should not suffice, tell it to the church, and ask the whole to pray; but do strive to bring dying sinners where Christ is working spiritual miracles. 

If you read further on in the chapter you will learn how to bring some persons to the Saviour who would otherwise never hear of him. 

Levi made a great feast, for he thought to himself, 

‘I should like Jesus to come and preach to the tax collectors. They are such great sinners, just such as I am; 

if I could but get them to hear him they might be converted. 

But,’ he thought, ‘if I ask them they would say they could not afford to give up a day’s work; they will not care to listen to a sermon; so,’ said he, ‘I will get them this way—I will invite them to my house to a feast; they will be sure to come then, and then I will ask Jesus to come and eat with them, and I know he will not let them go without saying a good word.’ 

So you see he used arts, as fowlers do when they are anxious to catch their prey. Now cannot you be as watchful and thoughtful in your generation as Levi was? Cannot you get the outcasts and the neglecters of the Sabbath to your own house or to anybody else’s house, and use means to bring them under the sound of God’s word?

If your church or chapel is ‘God’s house’, so is your home! 

God does not live in man-made buildings (Acts 17:24), 

but in his people (Hebrews 3:6); 

fellowship and evangelism are valid wherever his people are, whether in a public place or in private houses

 (Acts 2:46; 5:42; 20:20–21).

One antidote for many ills

“Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, 

cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.” 

Psalm 80:19

We want a revival, if we would promote the glory of God.

 The proper object of a Christian’s life is God’s glory. 

The church was made on purpose to glorify God; but it is only a revived church that brings glory to his name.

 Do all the churches honour God? 

I tell you no; there are some that dishonour him—not because of their erroneous doctrines, nor perhaps because of any defect in their formalities, but because of the want of life in their religion. 

There is a meeting for prayer; six people assemble beside the minister. Does that proclaim your homage to God? 

Does that do honour to Christianity? 

Go to the homes of these people; see what is their conversation when they are alone; mark how they walk before God. 

Go to their sanctuaries and hear their hymns; there is the beauty of music, but where is the life of the people? 

Listen to the sermon; it is elaborate, polished, complete, a masterpiece of oratory. 

But ask yourselves, “Could a soul be saved under it, except by a miracle? Was there anything in it adapted to stir men up to goodness? 

It pleased their ears; it instructed them in some degree, perhaps, but what was there in it to teach their hearts?”

 God knows there are many such preachers. 

Notwithstanding their learning and their wealth,

 they do not preach the gospel in its simplicity, and they do not draw near to God our Father. 

If we would honour God by the church, we must have a warm church, a burning church, loving the truths it holds, and carrying them out in the life. 

Oh that God would give us life from on high, lest we should be like that church of old of whom it was said, 

“Thou hast a name to live, and art dead.”
