The Holy Spirit compared with the wind

The Holy Spirit compared with the wind

‘The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.’ John 3:8

Suggested Further Reading:
Song of Solomon 4:12–16

I have known ministers who had some peculiar idiosyncrasy of experience which was not important; but their people all began to think and talk in the same way, and to have the same doubts and fears.

Now that will not do.
It is not the way in which the Most High acts with regard to the wind, and if he chooses to take all the points of the compass, and make use of them all, let us bless and glorify his name.

Are not the different winds various in their qualities?
Few of us like an east wind. Most of us are very glad when the wind blows from the south.

Vegetation seems to love the south-west.
A stiff north-easter is enough to make us perish; and long continuance of the north wind may well freeze the whole earth; while from the west, the wind seems to come laden with health from the sea; and though sometimes too strong for the sick, yet it is never a bad time when the west wind blows.

The ancients all had their different opinions about wind;
some were dry, some were rainy, some affected this disease, some touched this part of men, some the other.

Certain it is that God’s Holy Spirit has different qualities.
In the Canticles he blows softly with the sweet breath of love: turn on farther, and you get the same Spirit blowing fiercely with threatening and denunciation; sometimes you find him convincing the world ‘of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment;’ that is the north wind: at other times opening up Christ to the sinner, and giving him joy and comfort; that is the south wind, that blows softly, and gives a balminess in which poor troubled hearts rejoice; and yet
‘all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit.’

For meditation:

When the Holy Spirit blows like a wind, healthy effects follow, for example, causing the Scriptures to be written
(2 Peter 1:21), stimulating the early church into evangelism
(Acts 2:1–2) and bringing sinners to new birth (John 3:8).
Beware of other winds and their unhealthy spiritual effects (Ephesians 4:14).

A sense of pardoned sin

A sense of pardoned sin

“Thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.”
Isaiah 38:17

Suggested Further Reading:
Psalm 32

We are saved by faith, and not by feeling.
“We walk by faith and not by sight.”
Yet there is as much connection between faith and hallowed feeling, as there is between the root and the flower.

Faith is permanent, just as the root is ever in the ground; feeling is casual, and has its seasons. Just as the bulb does not always shoot up the green stem; far less is it always crowned with the many, many-coloured flower.

Faith is the tree, the essential tree; our feelings are like the appearance of that tree during the different seasons of the year. Sometimes our soul is full of bloom and blossom, and the bees hum pleasantly, and gather honey within our hearts.

It is then that our feelings bear witness to the life of our faith, just as the buds of spring bear witness to the life of the tree. Presently, our feelings gather still greater vigour, and we come to the summer of our delights.

Again, perhaps, we begin to wither into the dry and yellow leaf of autumn; nay, sometimes the winter of our despondency and despair will strip away every leaf from the tree, and our poor faith stands like a blasted stem without a sign of greenness.

And yet, my brethren, so long as the tree of faith is there we are saved. Whether faith blossom or not, whether it bring forth joyous fruit in our experience or not, so long as it be there in all its permanence we are saved.

Yet we should have the gravest reason to distrust the life of our faith, if it did not sometimes blossom with joy, and often bring forth fruit unto holiness.

For meditation:

True joy cannot exist without saving faith (1 Peter 1:8-9), but sometimes our salvation needs to have its joy restored (Psalm 51:12).

We May Speak for God

We May Speak for God

"Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will
I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before Me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as My mouth"   (Jeremiah 15:19).

Poor Jeremiah! Yet why do we say so?
The weeping prophet was one of the choicest servants of God and honored by Him above many.

He was hated for speaking the truth.
The word which was so sweet to him was bitter to his hearers, yet he was accepted of his LORD.

He was commanded to abide in his faithfulness, and then the LORD would continue to speak through him. He was to deal boldly and truthfully with men and perform the LORD's winnowing work upon the professors of his day, and then the LORD gave him this word: "Thou shalt be as my mouth."

What an honor! Should not every preacher, yea, every believer, covet it? For God to speak by us, what a marvel!
We shall speak sure, pure truth; and we shall speak it with power.

Our word shall not return void; it shall be a blessing to those who receive it, and those who refuse it shall do so at their peril. Our lips shall feed many. We shall arouse the sleeping and call the dead to life.

O dear reader, pray that it may be so with all the sent servants of our LORD.

Lead us not into temptation

Lead us not into temptation

‘Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’ Matthew 6:13

Suggested Further Reading:
Matthew 4:1–11

The text does not say, ‘Tempt us not;’ if it did, then there would be a difficulty; it does not say, ‘Lord, tempt us not,’ but it says, ‘Lead us not into temptation;’ and I think I shall very rapidly be able to show you that there is a vast difference between leading into temptation and actually tempting.

God tempts no man.
For God to tempt in the sense of enticing to sin would be inconsistent with his nature, and altogether contrary to his known character; but for God to lead us into those conflicts with evil which we call temptations, is not only possible, but usual.

Full often the great Captain of salvation leads us by his providence to battle fields where we must face the full array of evil, and conquer through the blood of the Lamb; and this leading into temptation is by divine grace overruled for our good, since by being tempted we grow strong in grace and patience.

Our God and Father may, for wise ends, which shall ultimately subserve his own glory and our profit, lead us into positions where Satan, the world and the flesh may tempt us; and the prayer is to be understood in that sense of a humble self-distrust which shrinks from the conflict.

There is courage here, for the suppliant calmly looks the temptation in the face, and dreads only the evil which it may work in him, but there is also a holy fear, a sacred self-suspicion, a dread of contact with sin in any degree.

The sentiment is not inconsistent with ‘all joy’ when the divers temptations do come; it is akin to the Saviour’s
‘If it be possible, let this cup pass from me,’
which did not for a moment prevent his drinking the cup even to its dregs.

For meditation:

Temptations to sin are bound to come (Luke 17:1),
but never from God (James 1:13).
It was the Holy Spirit who led the Lord Jesus Christ into the wilderness to be tempted, Satan who did the tempting (Matthew 4:1) and God who provided the means of escape (Matthew 4:4,7,10; 1 Corinthians 10:13).
